This picture is interesting to me though it's reminds me of certain pieces of the rolling papers JOB advertisement.

here's their site : [link]

Those adverts were painted during decades and decades until they started to release photographs adverts.. anyway the general atmosphere is, to me, too dark and so doesn't give you a path to look at the picture.
It decreases the contrast leading to a flatter impression of the drawing, adding some more light could lead to a drawing which still have a dark purpose with a more powerful light on some certain parts, like the cigarette, her face or even the smoke deadly face.

Despite this contrast point, the greek style base and the 'roof' are greats with well chosen colors and beautyful curves.
The woman is well drawn as well with maybe too much details on the neck ( unless it was done intentionally, it gives her a little ill aspect ).

The purple smoke is great because of its form, it's something between smoke and flesh that really inspires heavy darkness surrounding the woman.

The pose of the woman is really great and well transcripted, you can easily imagine how great it feels for her to pull all that smoke at this precise moment.

It's a good work in all its general caracteristics but the neck is well illuminated and catch the eye at first sight.. if it's intentionally done it's great, otherway it works too much :)

The title suits perfectly the drawing, good work, great color research

This is a critique from :iconthe-order-artists:

The composition on this piece looks way better than the original you did a while back. It is very well balanced and the directional like with her hair and that stylized aura really draws he viewer in to the piece. There is a also a lot more depth for the piece and the values are working although a little more on her face could help. The shadows of the structure of her neck is a little to strong and a little blocky. I would narrow them down more into a V and soften the values a little. A little more value range in the demon could work as well. Lastly her right hand holding the necklace still looks real awkward to me. I would really suggest looking a reference of a hand doing the same thin. Perhaps showing the back of the hand holding the necklace instead of the front would work better.

Hope this helps.

Wooow~ Love the overall effect, the textures look great, and the smooth colouring of her chest is lovely.

1. Her right arm (our left) is a little too long in the forearm. The elbow should stop at the bottom rib in the ribcage, while here it seems to reach her bellybutton.

2. And on the topic of her right arm, the curve of her wrist should be a lot tougher, if you know what I mean? It bends, yes, but protrudes a lot more.

3. This is probably nit-picky, since I'm going off how my mother smokes, but I think the cigarette should be placed higher up between her fingers. I've always seen it at the end of the first finger joint, right where the thumb reaches if it tries to touch between them. I think it's because they tap the cigarette with their thumb to knock off ash, but either way works, really. :D Speaking of hands, you draw them nicely!

4. I think her neck should be a wee bit shorter, but I really like how you drew it~

5. The edges of the smoke when it curves should be rounder, less spiky. Of course, that might be the point—to seem scary or some such, but since the title is Smooth poisoning, I thought I'd mention it. :D

6. I would personally suggest putting some light on the area of string where the necklace has no gems, to clarify. I just find it a little odd how you can see the string on her shoulder, but when it goes down to her chest, it disappears.

All in all, well done! I love how you did her hair, and her expression is very effective.

The expression... the colors... This one has a strong meaning to me. The cigarette in her hand, the blissful way she exhales it and the obvious pollution coming out of her nostrils.

Her hair looks stiff to me... something that wouldn't bother me as much if it didn't seem to conflict with her function in the image. She seems carefree (perhaps overly so), indulgent... giving herself over happily to life's richer pleasures. Her clothes, her necklace... and of course, the cigarette. Everything about her seems... euphoric, except her hair. It looks wooden, I think.

Other than that, though, fantastic job. I love a piece that makes a clear statement like this without using any words.

This rather remind me of a picture a really old picture about anesthetic when it was first invented. I would need to dig out the book I have it in and Im not really sure were that is.
But essentially the picture was of a person on a table under anesthetic and there were demons around them pushing down on their chest and what not.
Any who, very nice choice in colour, also a very interesting subject choice to ponder.
Very nice.

I love the myriad of colors and textures of this piece. I think its really amazing. There are a couple of minor things that I would like to point out however.. The necklace seems to be breaking apart and if that is the case then the beads should not be so linear. Also the hand holding the beats is bent at such an angle as it appears painful to look at. I do wish the full image was larger to look at so I could see more of the detail. But this is a great card.

Just too awesome. I love the symbolism behind it all. My favorite thing is her unrealness, like her hair and that smug expression on her face. To me, this symbolizes another world. GOod work!

the smoke needs to be wispier and less block colored. she could do with some nice defined lips. but other than that i like the overall dark theme and tones.

I love the composition, the colors and the meaning. The only thing I find wrong is her face. Her lips have no plumpy fleshness to them, and no pinkish tone and her eyes need to have different shading, right now it looks like she has no eyeballs. Try taking a picture of yourself with your eyes closed looking that way to see how the anatomy is. That or find a stock photo =)

I like this one because of the symbolism of evil in the smoke. And smaller things like the way she's tugging at her beads and the taut muscles in her neck. All awesome.

That is beautiful! I especially love the monster. If I had to critisise at all I'd say there is something a bit weird about her face...maybe the eyelashes need to be longer as they always look long when the eyes are closed. Also the tendons in the neck are a little creepy.

Hope you don't mind me saying that, its just it seems like you are seeking constructive criticism. I know it can be nice to get, instead of people doing a lot of 'omg I love it!' which is what I'm always tempted to do. But I'm always a little nervous when giving it too... :|

Seriously, though, I do love it. What did you use to colour it?

Amazing, so much meaning behind it that a person can take that can be so different than what another. Art that makes a person think is one of the best, so great job! :D
My computer isn't letting me see it in full view so I'll tell you what I see. I feel like her hair isn't as natural as the rest of the picture, however you may have wanted that. Also, her left hand seems to be off somehow...

Shading is nice and youve used a duitable range of colours.
One small thing - her right breast looks bigger than her left, but overall nice work =)

Nice illustration.
Your characterisation of the smoke as a dark and hazardous entity was highly succesful.

The being naked part, I am not to sure about.
The link between her voluptuousness and her pleasure was quite honestly lost on me.
It falls out of the reach of my own subset of logic and knowledge, so therefore, I couldn't apreciate this part.

All in consideration, this was quite a succesfull illustration.

The nudity is not presented to play a major role in this picture, althought this is obsiously evident that it have one in my mind, but I'm just not able to translate all my feelings..

I'm not trying to show this woman as 'voluptueuse', but the drug she using.. and which is "killing" her ;)

It's hard to explain in english :p.

I was wondering if you were francophone or flamand. Sorry. No worries I thought that I hope ^^ :lolly:

I think I see your point.
You just wanted to show the hazardous drug she was using, and give the danger itself a monstrous form.
For artistic purproses, and to make your work more apealing, you decided to make the main character of your work voluptuous and beautiful.

Is that almost right?

My favorite part of this piece is the smoke. REALLY brings interest here. Then the color of the woman's skin (looks rather orange to me) is a nice contrast to the purple. Loving it.

I love the colors in this, and the idea is really cool! The skull shape in the smoke is awesome. I can tell that this is influenced by the art nouveau style, but I think there's a couple things you could do to make it look more alike. I think if you eliminated all grey shades and used brighter colors for shading, it might help. Maybe slightly bolder outlines as well. The anatomy in her neck is correct, but I think it is defined a little bit too much, and it makes it stick out more than it should.

Great artwork!

Thank you for this optimism :)

Concerning the "Art-nouveau-alike-intention", I think I'm happy with the lights
likeness the picture has.

I'm working on the porch, adding more Paris's art-nouveau likeness :)

In the Paris's popular-neighborhoods there are tons of Art-nouveau pieces in urban amenagements ( Metro, lampadaires, cafés/bars/boulangeries's typographies ), which are much coarsest than Mucha's picture for exemple (if it's the kind of things in your mind) ; I'm nearest of this "popular art nouveau" :)

Yeah, most of my comments are just based on observations of a couple of posters I have. One is of a lovely red-headed maiden, both hands full with golden beer. I think that it's a really neat style and it would be challenging to imitate it, I've thought about trying it though.
